A lot of responsibilities come with owning birds as pets, especially as it is recommended that you own at least two, so they have each other’s company. There are a ton of hazards around the house that you may not initially think are dangerous for your birds, and these hazardous areas must be dealt with before you bring the bird into your home. You must also make sure that you conduct plenty of research beforehand as there will be habits that you need to change that you would not have realized. They can be incredible pets to own and can be incredibly entertaining to spend time with, and they come in a variety of breeds and colors and look extremely beautiful. Make sure your shoulders are always ready for a surprise visit from your birds and allow them to have plenty of time to spread their wings throughout the house.

Keep Your Windows Shut

This tip may seem obvious, but make sure you keep all windows shut when your bird is out of its cage. Too many people have lost their pet birds due to carelessly leaving their windows open when they shouldn’t be. If you have never owned a bird before, you may be in the habit of always having your windows open, but you need to get used to keeping them shut as soon as possible. If you want some airflow in your house or to let the breeze in during the warmer summer months, make sure you lock your bird in its cage during this time.

Keep an Eye on Their Health

Birds also need to go to the vets for check-ups and other health concerns. They are extremely sensitive to certain things such as the fumes of nail polish and candles, so if they are displaying any change in behavior after the usage of these items, then it may be a good idea to take them to the vet for some advice. For other pet advice, look at Easyvet.com for information about other types of pets too.

Avoid Toxic Plants

Some plants can be toxic to many animals, and the same goes for birds too. Make sure you research specific types of plants that are safe for birds and your other pets before you purchase any. Animals do not realize these plants are toxic to them and birds can be quite curious at times, so you may find that they try to eat your plants. While bird-safe plants do not cause any harm to their health, you may want to keep an eye on them, otherwise, your beautiful plants will not be looking so great after a while.

Keep Human Food Away from Them

Similarly, to keeping them away from your plants, you must keep them away from human food, especially certain types such as chocolate, and refrain from having avocados placed where your bird can eat them as they are deadly. Sugary and dairy-based food products can cause your bird to have an upset stomach so stick to their prescribed foods when researching the best way to feed them.
